Polynesia – The Sea, 1946

Conceived by Henri Matisse in 1946, Polynesia – The Sea belongs to the artist’s seminal decorative program developed from his cut-outs.

From its inception, the composition was intended for the textile medium and for architectural scale.

Woven by Pinton according to the historic standards of the Mobilier national, in collaboration with the Maison Matisse, this tapestry forms part of the direct continuation of the original edition conceived by the artist.

It belongs to a rare institutional corpus created for significant architectural settings.

An example is held in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris.

By virtue of its scale, provenance, and historical position, Polynesia – The Sea stands as a foundational work within a major collection.
